Ikea chooses OptiLedge shopping platforms

RBR Staff Writer Published 15 February 2012

Swedish retailer Ikea has chosen lean alternative shipping platforms consisting of loading ledges and paper pallets over its wooden pallets, which will be phased out across its global operations.

The company has made the decision based on the advantages associated with plastic pallets and paper platforms, commercially available as the OptiLedge.

The change required a complete overhaul of supply chain operations and routines of the company. The OptiLedge presents the opportunity for savings to the supply chain. It decreases the costs associated with labor, fuel, packaging and product damage.

The less than two-pound plastic shipping pallet, which cuts overall wood consumption and reduces overall fuel emissions, is durable, 100% recyclable, helps keep the air clean.

OptiLedge is less susceptible to moisture, maintains stiffness with flexible loads. The injection molding process ensures much higher levels of product consistency.
